ORANGE BLOSSOMS: Finlayson-Cowan wedding. A very pretty wedding was celebrated in the Methodist Church, Balaklava on Wednesday evening last, at 7 p.m. The contracting parties were Mr. Everard Finlayson, son of Mr D Finlayson, of Owen, and Miss Eleanor Cowan, daughter of Mr. Joseph Cowan of 'Kelvin House" Balaklava. The church was crowded with guests and well-wishers of the bride and bridegroom, the officiating minister being the Rev Geo. Hill.
The intimate friends of the bride had been busy previous to the ceremony, with the result that the church was tastefully decorated. Over the bridal party was erected an arch, from which was suspended a bell. From the arch to the two front lamp pillars and thence to the centre ones, extended dainty festoons of white, prettily decorated with dahlias and asparagus and maiden hair fern, while ever each aisle was suspended in white the initials of the happy couple, and a few stately pampas added to the attractiveness of the decorations.
The bride, (who was given away by her father) looked charming, gowned in an exquisite costume of white Japanese silk, with lace and velvet ribbon trimmings. She wore a train, bridal veil and orange blossom, and carried a handsome shower bouquet (gift of the bridegroom) of tubor roses, chrysanthemums, double petunias, sweet saltans, and asparagus and maiden hair fern. Her going away dress was a navy blue voile, with hat to match.
The bride was attended, by Miss B. Cowan, Miss R. Finlayson, and Miss Jacka as bridesmaids, all attired in white Swiss muslin. with lace trimmings, wearing white bats, and carried white fans with white and yellow ribbon streamers (gifts of the bride). The bridegroom's gifts to the bridesmaids were gold band initialled rings.
The bridegroom was attended by Messrs. R. J FinIayson, H. Cowan, and A. J. Freebairn.
After the ceremony was over an adjournment was made to the Institute Hall, where Mr. aud Mrs. Finlayson received their guests. During the evening the usual toasts were honored. That of the bride and bridegroom was ably proposed by Rev. Hall, and appropriately responded to by Mr Everard Finlayson. Mr. A. H Dale did full justice to the toast to the bridesmaids, Mr. R. J. Finlayson responding on their behalf. The parents of the bride and bridegroom was given by Mr. J. T.. F. Johnson, and responded to by Mr. Cowan aud Mr. Finlayson.
A musical programme was then gone through, those taking, part being:- Mrs. F. W. Loader, overture; trio, Miss R. and Messrs. Oliver and R J. Finlayson; songs, Misses ,R. Finlayson and R Stevens, Messrs. A. H. Dale, Oliver Finlayson, and T. A. Thomas.
The bride was the recipient of a large number of useful and valuable presents.
