Extract from 'GJ Rechner & His Descendants' by Judy Gale Rechner, 2008, p 50 & 51 :
"Theodore Bernhardt Emil FISCHER, the second child of Alwin and Ernestine Fischer, achieved much in his 37 years. In the early teens, 1889, he was deeply influenced by blind evangelist Houston from England. A little later he attended the services of the Kermode Street Church of Christ where, under the preaching of J Colbourne, he made a public confession of faith in the Saviour. For the rest of his life he was active in the service of his Lord, taking on various offices such as Bible School teacher and superintendent , Band of Hope secretary and subsequently president. Aged just 19 he accepted his first preaching appointment at the Prospect Church.
"In 1902 he accepted the invitation to minister at Rookwood and Canley Vale in NSW. After two happy and successful years he accepted a call to Lismore, where a strong, well-organised central church was developed and commodius tabernacle erected. Unfortunately, after only three years , the humidity necessitated a change. After a few months' break in Adelaide he accepted the call to Cheltenham and in 1908 moved with his pregnant wife Florence and daughters May and Flora to Victoria.
"With his characteristic enthusiasm soon many of the locals joined the church and in addition to his own parish work he was prominent in Christian Endeavour work, being president of the Union. An advocate for Bible School he became the first president of the Victoria Bible School Union. Theo was also interested in missionary work and became the organising secretary of the Federal Foreign Missionary Executive Committee. In 1912 he undertook a tour of India to inspect first hand the church's missionary work.
"Nearly 1,000 people of various religious beliefs and from near and far attended his funeral on 15th July 1913." |
