| Notes for biography |
MISSION WORK: For various periods from 1937 to 1952, Len and Jessie were at aboriginal missions in Kunmunya, Ernabella and Port Peirce.
* Kunmunya was in remote northern Western Australia. A mission was begun in 1912 by Rev RH Wilson at Port George IV just south of the Prince Regent River. In 1915 Bob Love was there for 6 months and helped select a more suitable site and the mission moved to Kunmunya in 1916. Love later went to Mapoon Mission (Queensland) but he, with his wife Margaret) was back at Kunmunya from 1927 to 1940 when they went to Ernabella Mission (South Australia). Jessie's and Len's missionary work was probably inspired by Rev Love who they would have known when he was the pastor at St Andrews Presbyterian Church at Strathalbyn. But he was not at Kunmunya when Jessie and Len arrived there in 1937. They were also influenced by Dr Charles Duguid who was involved with Ernabella Mission. Kunmunya later moved to become Mowanjum near Derby.
* Len and Jessie went to Kunmunya immediately after their wedding in 1937. They were there for 6 months.
* After a short time in Kunmunya they went to Ernabella. They were there for various periods from 1938 to 1944 (ie the war period).
* Len tried to enlist with the air-force but was required to remain on the land because farming was essential for the war effort.
* Len went back to Kunmunya for a short time during the war because of the possibility of a Japanese action in the area.
After the war, from 1945 to 1952, they were at Port Peirce mission.
* During this period Len maintained diaries and also collected artifacts. This is all now in the APY archives for the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. These items are in the care of John Dalwitz, ph 08 8226 4873. Ian Young has regular contact with John.
