    Notes for biography Janette was a dressmaker's assistant, earning six shillings a week. She decided to start out on her own and her sister Charlotte came to help. Charlotte had been in domestic service. Janette withdrew her life savings of two pound and ten shillings and bought a sewing machine. Charlotte became a designer and later held a position at Colson's - a leading fashion firm in the city. Neither of the girls married.   [1
