  • Name Caroline Edwards Jane McKenzie 'Carry' FINLAYSON

    Gender Female
Notes for biography We think that Carry and Caroline are the same person.
We have only two pieces of information about Carry and two about Caroline:-
    1. Carry is named in the 1851 census as a 5 year old (with David also a 5 year old in that census). If she was David's twin, who we know was born in 25th November 1845, they would have been 5 years old at census time if the census was held in the earlier part of that year.
    2. Carry was mentioned in David's letter when he visited 8 Southside Place Inverenss, in 1901.
    3. Caroline is named as a 12 year old in the 1861 census.
    4. Caroline's OPR for 19th April 1849.
    Research:-
    * We have not been able to find a a separate OPR for Carry.
    * Maybe her registered name was not Carry, but something quite different. We have searched all Finlaysons born in between 1830 and 1850 - regardless of first name - but nothing matches.
    * David and Carry were probably not twins. David's birth is registered and it would be expected that, if they were twins, the parents would have baptized them at the same time and they would be recorded next to each other on the OPR record - but nothing found. It is not likely that the parents would have baptized and registered one twin and not the other - especially as they were consistent with baptizing all their other children.
    * If Carry was born in 1845 with David, why was she left off the 1861 census? And if Caroline was born in 1849, why was she left off the 1851 census? These anomalies are resolved if in fact there was a simple error in the 1851 census - Carry's age should have been noted as 2 instead of 5 years.
    * Then it makes sense that there was one girl named Caroline, but nicknamed 'Carry', born in 1949.

Residence Residences : Carry's brother, David, refers to her in his letter in 1901. She visited him in 8 Southside Place Inverness for at least a week - so Carry she was probably living some distance from this house (ie too far away to come to visit each day). She would have been 51 years old at the time.
