Biography : James was born in 1872 at Angus Plains. His mother, Ann, was his father's second wife.
At the close of his education James went farming at Bordertown with his father (source: Barbara Regan)
His father died when James was 23 years old and James
subsequently inherited the Gordon property, 'Beaufort'. He sold it soon afterwards.
After selling 'Beaufort' he left SA and went to the Dandenong district in Victoria but after a few years he moved to Goolwa.
He was on the Point Elliot District Council for two years and in 1906 was on the Goolwa Town Council (source: Barbara Regan).
James was a lay preacher. Around 1901 he played a part in the work of the Churches of Christ in 'a new cause in Goolwa, where a nucleus of substantial members had formed a fellowship led by James Gordon who had been a valuable officer in the Strathalbyn church'. (ref : D, 315)
He leased a property of 700 acres at Laffin Point, near Goolwa (source: Barbara Regan). He was involved in agriculture and dairying.
He married Ruth Susanna KYLE (or KLYE) 1911. James and
Ruth did not have any children.
James died in 1953.
Ruth died in 1965.
There is a brief biography of James in 'The Cylopedia of South Australia' in 1909.
