Ann Willesee DEANS [1] |
- * Surnames: At her baptism, Ann was given her mother's maiden surname, DEANS rather than her father's surname, WILLESEE. (Her father, William Willesee, might have died a little before Ann was born, because her mother is identified as a widow on Ann's birth record). Ann's surname changed to BEECH when she married Samuel Beech and the RAINS when she married William Rains - and finally, SALTMARSH when she married Henry. On some documents Deans is spelled DEAINS or DAINS. And Beech is sometimes BEACH. And Rains is sometimes Raines. Willesee is always Willesee and is used as a middle name for many descendants.
* First names: Her birth record just has Ann (not Anne) but, during her life, she used Ann Willesee.

| Notes for biography |
Ann's three marriages - with Samuel Beech, William Rains and Henry Saltmarsh:-
* William Rains' first marriage was with Sarah Perkins. They married in England and soon after, they migrated to South Australia on the Navarino in 1837. Their first child, John, was born just three weeks after they disembarked. They had eight more children - Jane in 1841, no name 1843, Ann 1845, William 1846, Eliza 1849, William 1850, Charlotte 1853 and Eleanor in 1855. It appears that sometime after this, the relationship between Sarah and William ceased and then his relationship with Ann began, and their first child was born in 1860.
* Ann's first marriage was with Samuel Beech in Wisbech in 1854 and, five months later, they migrated on the Octavia which arrived in Port Adelaide in 1855. The passenger list had a Mr Beach (that spelling) with wife and child, but no other details (www.theshipslist.com/ships). [research: Who was this child? - Apparently born in Wisbech. "Ann brought her son with her. She apparently had either had an illegitimate child in England or was married to someone else" (Rosemary Saltmarsh, email on 13th Aug 2018).] In their first year in Australia, they had a daughter, Elizabeth, and another, Frederica Selina, in 1858. Ann's relationship with Samuel ceased around this time - after four years of marriage.
* Ann's second marriage: Around this time, Ann commenced a relationship with William Rains and they had a daughter Lucelle in 1860 - less than two years after Frederica. Subsequently Ann and William had five more children - Liela (Lillia) in 1863, Frederick 1865, Cornelia 1867, Donale 1869 and Florence 1872.
Ann and William were not officially married until after the births of all their children (except the last) - probably because they were both legally married to someone else when they commenced their relationship. Ann had been with Samuel Beech for four years and William had been with Sarah Perkins for at least 12 years. As things eventuated, Ann and William were together for a decade before they were married - as soon as Sarah died. Maybe, Samuel had died by this time, but we have no confirmation for this. Their wedding was in the Adelaide Registry Office on 4th Feb 1871.
William probably died some time between 1872 and 1897. [research: When did William and Samuel die?]
* Ann's third marriage: Henry Saltmarsh on 14th July 1897, in the Dry Creek home of her daughter Selina (who married Richard William Barrien).
